March, 2009 – Bel Air, MD – The Flexographic Pre-Press Platemakers Association (FPPA <http://www.fppa.net/> ) challenged its members to improve Sustainability at the 12th Annual Convention, March 1-3 at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, AZ. The newly inducted President and Board Members will focus on improving green procedures in 2009.
As defined by the FPPA’s “Sustainability Vision Statement” <http://www.fppa.net/sustainability/index.cfm> , Sustainability practices are “supporting innovating manufacturing technologies and practices that promote environmental and economic health.” The Sustainability Achievement Award was presented to Mark/Trèce, Inc <http://www.marktrece.com/> . The company is pursuing Sustainability initiatives including recycling sheet polymer and PVC material, amongst many other plans.

“We are honored to receive the first Sustainability award presented by the FPPA,” said Lee Grantham, VP for Mark/Trèce. “We look forward to doing our part in representing our industry in keeping the planet green.”
Neil Saunders, FPPA’s past President, introduced Peter C. Cappas of United Engravers, Inc. as the President for the year ahead. United Engravers <http://www.unitedengravers.com/> is a designer and manufacturer of printing plates for the corrugated and flexible packaging industries.
In his acceptance speech, the inducted President stated that he is anticipating addressing FPPA members’ concerns. One of Cappas’ objectives is to market the Association to prospects and individuals in the flexographic printing industry.
“To accomplish this goal, the FPPA needs support from our member and supplier organizations,” said Cappas.
Topics covered at the March Convention focused primarily on Sustainability and the recent Smurfit Stone Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
Debbra Johnson, Senior Marketing Consultant at DuPont, discussed Sustainability opportunities that could become available within the flexographic printing industry. Johnson presented information on how to utilize the WalMart Sustainability Scorecard to increase potential business opportunities.
The Association held a formal presentation and Q&A session to focus on member’s concerns about the Smurfit Stone Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing. Rob Charles, partner in the Finance and Bankruptcy Group of Lewis and Roca Lawyers in Tucson, provided an in-depth analysis of the pre-petition and post-petition filing.
During the Q&A session, FPPA members asked about the status of the critical vendor list, DIP financing, and the Sierra Liquidity Financing (buying of receivables), among other topics.

The incoming President and inductees look forward to promoting the FPPA and educating prospective and current members. Going forward, the Board will continue to provide insight on new equipment and software developing in the flexographic pre-press printing industry.
