WMU's "Mastering Printed Electronics Principles Workshop" June 9-10, 2010

 

The Center for the Advancement of Printed Electronics (CAPE) and Western Michigan University announces a "Mastering Printed Electronics Principles Workshop" on June 9-10, 2010 at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, in Kalamazoo, MI.

A two day workshop held on June 9-10 and hosted by Western Michigan University’s Center for the Advancement of Printed Electronics (CAPE) will assist any persons currently in the printing industry gain a better understanding and appreciation of printed electronics and how it differs from traditional graphic printing. Course participants will also learn how printing functional inks differs from graphic printing. An introduction to materials for printed electronics will be provided, as well as an overview of device architecture and device design issues. A review of the benefits and disadvantages of current printing technologies will be provided, some of which will be demonstrated. Lead speakers include Robert Tulis, Director of Technology and Business Development, Flextech Organization and Eric Serenius, Vice President, Daetwyler R&D.

Participants will also gain the knowledge of how process modifications can be utilized to enhance existing printing processes, i.e. Gravure, Flexography and Offset traditional printing methods. The printing of electronic materials will be demonstrated utilizing equipment located in WMU’s CAPE and Printing Pilot Plant. The Comco flexographic press, Ceruttiroto gravure press and the Daetwyler AccuPress will be featured.

The workshop sessions will be held in WMU’s Welborn Hall. This training event will give employees, new and experienced, the chance to ask questions and get answers about issues pertaining to these business interests in this new field of technology. With a mixture of classroom as well as hands and eyes on press training, the WMU Mastering Printed Electronics Principles course will focus on answering questions such as:

  • What is the impact of this technology on current consumer
    markets?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages to the primary printing
    processes being used?
  • What are the differences in requirements for printing graphic and
    electronic materials?
  • What materials and substrates are being used?
  • What do you need to capture this emerging market?
  • What are the design principles of this technology?
