The Phoenix Challenge Foundation Continues the College Competition Tradition
Charlotte, NC. (8 March 2010) - The Phoenix Challenge Foundation announces the 2010 College Competition. It has been scheduled for May 1, and will run concurrently with the FFTA Forum and INFO*FLEX taking place this year in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Phoenix College Challenge is an all-day, intensive graphic arts competition designed to drive students to a high-level of execution and presentation. Several teams from two- and four-year colleges located throughout the U.S. and Canada will participate in this year's event.
Fifty-three college students will make up 10 teams and will compete by participating and solving a 'real-life' business, flexo printing situation. This year's objective is to act as a packaging print vendor and create the sales pitch for a custom line of hygiene labels and packaging for a mock hotel chain. Each team will have developed the following before arriving at the competition:
- Two to four sample concepts with package and label designs
- Create, design and print samples using flexo process
- A presentation and proposal to be presented to the judges as their 'sales pitch'. This includes physical print samples and package mock-ups.
A judging panel made up of seven industry professionals will review each presentation and all printed work submitted, then score each team for final winners of the competition. The top awards will be announced during the Awards Banquet on Sunday, May 2 at the FFTA Forum. The winning team members receive a contest trophy for combined total score. Other winners receive trophies for achievement in individual categories such as marketing, concept, design, etc.
About The Phoenix Challenge Foundation
Founded in 1998, the Phoenix Challenge Foundation is an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization of industry professionals dedicated to the recruitment and development of the future workforce for flexography. Each year flexo students and teachers from throughout the U.S. and Canada are invited to the Phoenix Challenge Competitions. The High School event is a two and half-day skill-based competition with hands-on and comprehension testing in operating a flexo press, prepress, plate-making, and overall flexo knowledge. Winners are eligible for scholarships funded by the Phoenix Challenge Foundation. To date, $30,000 in scholarships has been awarded to encourage students to pursue further education and a career in flexography. The Phoenix Challenge College Competition is a school year long event in which an industry problem is presented to the students and requires both market and manufacturing research. Students then present to a panel of industry judges which grade them in four different categories research, concept, graphics and execution.
